Super-Moulds final dissemination seminar

Adhesion and friction between plastic parts and tool surfaces is a well-known problem in plastic injection moulding and a limiting factor for productivity, part quality and mould life.
The Super-Moulds project has systematically investigated the relationship between surface coatings, textures and demoulding properties in plastic injection moulding. This has led to a deep understanding and mathematical models of the topic and the development of optimized surface treatments. These increase the efficiency and lifetime of the moulds.
The optimized surface treatments have been proven to extend the stable process window of injection moulding and changed the need for slip angles and additives.
At this dissemination seminar results from the project is presented alongside cases, lab tours and excellent opportunities for networking with industry experts.

Towards systematic lab scale testing for evaluating the potential effect of surface treatments on the productivity of plastic pieces

The institute iRAP (institute of applied polymer research) in Fribourg/Switzerland centralizes in the SuperMoulds project a large part of the lab-scale injection experiments. This institute faces the overall technical challenges for analyzing and benchmarking the divers surface treatments.
Mould filling and demoulding of complex plastic parts is complicated by sticking and high friction between the polymer and the mould surface resulting in long cooling times to avoid deformation, process interruptions due to cleaning and reduced mould service life. The task of the iRAP institute of is to perform a systematic screening of many mould surface treatments to identify the optimal treatments for an end-user application.
This talk gives an overall introduction in the Super-Moulds project and shows a set of results of mould filling, demoulding and surface analysis tests as well as one end-user test.

Thib coatings for improved demoulding

By applying a coating to the surface of an injection moulding tool, the interaction between tool and polymer can be changed. This can lead to easier demoulding, or even enable the demoulding in the first place. In addition, coatings can provide improved wear protection and thereby increase the lifetime of the mould. Both these aspects make coatings highly relevant for moulding tools.
A broad range of coatings can by produced by physical vapour deposition (PVD) techniques. The Tribology Centre at Danish Technological Institute (DTI) has extensive experience with the production and development of PVD coatings for many different applications, including demoulding of plastic.
In the Super-Moulds project, DTI has applied coatings on both test tools and tools that were used in production. In the process of finding the best solution in each moulding situation, several different coatings have been considered.
This presentation will give a brief introduction to a specific PVD technique, and the coatings produced by this technique. The usefulness of coatings in moulding applications will also be discussed.
